About Us

Lake of the Torches Resort Casino started as a bingo operation in the 1970s. The various tribes in Wisconsin reached agreements with state officials that allowed for bingo halls to be started and the Bingo Hall was established in Lac du Flambeau. The hall continually grew in popularity and business steadily increased. In the 1980s, the tribe reached another agreement with the state allowing for a casino that would include blackjack and slot machines. A casino was established in 1989 in downtown Lac du Flambeau in what was the Save More grocery store. The casino grew in popularity in the area and attracted both residents of northern Wisconsin and tourists who came north for vacations.

The success of the casino allowed the tribe to expand its operations. In 1996, the Lake of the Torches Resort Casino opened on the shore of Pokegama Lake. The new facility featured a hotel, restaurant, food court, and expanded slot machines and blackjack tables. In 2002, the Woodlands Oasis water recreation center was built attached to the hotel. The facility includes a kiddie pool, 19-person whirlpool, a sauna, and a large adult pool with water sports and bubble benches.

Lake of the Torches Resort Casino has been the recipient of numerous awards and feature stories, including industry acclaim for its Dreamstakes® promotion. As a result of such success, Lake of the Torches has earned a reputation as the premier resort casino in Wisconsin and continues to grow with amenities and features guests have come to expect.

Lake of the Torches Resort Casino is an entity of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Indians and is run as a business of the tribe. The band has inhabited the Lac du Flambeau area since 1745 when Chief Keeshkemun led the band to the area.

The band acquired the name Lac du Flambeau from its gathering practice of harvesting fish at night by torchlight. The name Lac du Flambeau or Lake of the Torches refers to this practice and was given to the band by the French traders and trappers who visited the area.

The Lac du Flambeau Reservation was officially established by treaties in 1837 and 1842. The area was continually logged in the following years and became a tourist destination for families from southern Wisconsin and Illinois around the turn of the century.

To increase economic activity and foster self-reliance among the various Native American communities, the tribe began bingo and casino operations. Revenues generated by the casino operations would go to the tribe and directly benefit the economic and social development of the community. The casino has enhanced both the economy of the Lakeland area and to provide public services to residents in Lac du Flambeau.
